The Rhydin Minute: News for Ghouls
VoicePost Help
404K 2:03
“Good evening and welcome to the Rhydin minute. I'm your Rhydin reporter, Ala'mana'letha'lethar'rillee-ya, elven Princess and ruler of the unpronounceable realm.

Rhy'dins seen yet another unprecedented week in birth rate. Hospital pre-natal staff are feeling the push lately left over from this summer's boom. Doctor Hellbreath, specialist in demon pediatrics says that he hasn't seen this kind of boom since Rhydin decided to stop filtering and treating the water. He says that twins apparently are out of season and triplets are in. Looking haggard, Doctor Hellbreath seemed to express enthusiasm in looking forward to Thanksgiving. A season, he says, sees lesser births due to the yearly bought of random disappearances which happen during major holidays.

Yesterday, a local barmaid by the name of Breann specialpants found herself a surprise during her lunch break. Hidden within her sandwich was a 400 carat diamond ring. Breann's fiance, Lord High King Prince Duke Major General Bob apparently meant it as a surprise way of proposing to the lovely lady.

Unfortunately, the ring wasn't able to be worn immediately by Breann due to her surprise and, subsequently, choking to death on the diamond. Lucky for Kind Bob, a priest of Pelor was at hand to immediately resurrect Breann. Sources say, King Bob has learned his lesson about hiding his rocks in things which will inevitably end up in Breanns mouth.

And now, the Rhydin Weather:

For today, expect sunshine with highs in the 100's, partly cloudy thunder storms with light sprinkling of hail, rain, snow, kittens, puppies and men and a low of -4. Tomorrow, weatherman Ug'zug tells us to get out our umbrellas because it's going to rain glitter. Later on this week, expect randomly thrown thunderbolts from drunken old men.

And that's it for this evening's Rhydin Minute. Join us next week, when we share with you our exclusive on the vegetarian undead: grains before brains, bro. I'm your Rhydin Reporter, Ala'mana'letha'lethar'rillee-ya and that's...the Rhy'din news.”

Alcoholism, Drug abuse --in my role play?
This little role play discussion and/or rant if you will, was directly inspired by and taken from a lovely snippet of conversation I shared with a friend of mine, [info]the_dream_king.

It started with a very reasonable rant or observation on the glorified abuse of drug use which seems to be the nominal both in Dragon’s Mark Red Dragon Inn story lines, and from AOL (America Online for those of you not familiar) role playing characters and story lines.

It appears that drug abuse and addiction to drugs has been a reoccurring theme (up there with many others.) as well as alcoholism. As someone so very, very near the subject of alcoholism as well as someone who was witness to the falling apart of another human being to her addiction to crack—I am always faced with a mix of emotions when seeing them played out.

Most—not all—but most people who role play these story lines seem to do so with visible indicators in their writing that reveal they haven’t ever dealt with this sort of thing themselves personally, witnessed it, nor researched it. They are unaware of the complete and total devastation these harmful diseases can have on friends, families, relatives and relationships. It’s always either a ‘fun thing to do on the side,’ or some sort of plot point where the would-be hero gets addicted, his friends come to the rescue and then it’s happily ever after.

If only in a perfect world, right?

Now, on one hand (that’s my role playing hand) I understand the absolute drive as well as need for there to be a happy ending. Real life? Real life sucks, hard. There aren’t a lot of happy endings to real life stories. We seek to find the ease to all the bills and stresses of everyday in the sweet perfection of a pretend world, where Peter the elvendust addict gets saved and cleaned up, with his family all hugging and smiling around him.

But for once…For once…I’d really like someone to do their research. I’d really like someone to take the time to delve deep into the literature there is out there on these subjects and realize just how utterly awful drug addiction and alcoholism truly is, both to the addict and those around her. I want to see a nod in the direction of truth, a salute to those who break their hearts everyday, to the woman who have to struggle with trusting their hearts or their addicted husbands, the children who watch their fathers turn into different people and the families that shatter because of drunken words.

For once, I would like those who role play these things to take just five minutes and do a simple, single Google search. To read the stories of real people dealing with these things. Just five minutes—maybe ten if the story is exceptional or they get caught up.

I can’t really be offended by their choice of role play. It’s their characters, their story lines, and their rights to role play what they choose. So I won’t and honestly, I am not. I’m only asking, nay, praying, for a little bit of study on the subject.

And this entire rant/discussion/plea could cover so much on the rape, child abuse, abuse, prostitution and eating disorder story lines, too.

I watch characters flutter by on the glittery ride of addiction home free, with perfect teeth, healthy weight, free-of-scabs-skin, liver-complication-free story lines and can only wonder if it’s really that hard these days to Google for information. If the people behind these characters have ever had to deal with this sort of stuff and understand how almost belittling their SL’s can be to those who have survived. On both sides, yes, drug addict and recovering alcoholic.

All I’m asking is for a little quick research and reading, but I have the feeling that may even be too much to ask for some.

Thanks [info]the_dream_king for the idea. I hope I didn't step on your toes. :3

As a once Anime hater to the rest.
Dear World,

Anime is no longer just Dragonball Z, Pokemon, Digimon, or zany nose-bleeder comedies revolving around sex.

So the next time someone is legitimately role playing a character, a role player whom you know for a fact is decent--don't fucking turn your nose up if you find out the character they enjoy playing happens to come from a "cartoon."

Some of them are breaking ground, true artistic and story driven ground to become something far better than what we assume.

I don't fucking turn my nose up at a good role player if I find they role play something that isn't human, from a book, or from a movie if they do it well. Don't fucking turn your nose up at those who enjoy role playing (those who role play WELL) anime.

Yeah. That includes me, bitches.

ROLE PLAYERS EVERYWHERE:
JUST BECAUSE TWO CHARACTERS OF THE OPPOSITE SEX ROLE PLAY TOGETHER DOES NOT MEAN IT IS FLIRTING.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, YOU MAY CONTINUE ABOUT YOUR DAY.

You know you love chat based role playing when:
This is sort of normal and you can overlook it without issue.

From an AOL role playing room:

The UItramarines: He strolls towards the exit of the quiet tavern, waving his glock in the air and somehow replacing his sceptor with a piece of fried chicken.
The UItramarines: "Take it from me, parents just don't understand."
The UItramarines: He slides a piece of watermelon out from beneath the confines of his cloak.
The UItramarines: "Around blacks, never relax."

[info]thewlisian_afer Said in [info]bad_rpers_suck some things which I really agree with. It isn't something I am experiencing right now with the two or three people I've been role playing with mainly the past few months, but it's still a good thing.

You need to be honest in a polite way to the people you role play with. I've seen so many people do the: "Drop the character entirely to get out of a plot/relationship/something they don't like" dance and it makes me go: "no wonder no one wants to play for very long."

There's not a lot of consistency; I know I was guilty of this myself after taking a break for six months myself, but I have learned a very valuable lesson with last year's mistake. That lesson is the same one [info]thewlisian_afer says in his post in the comm. Just tell people your role playing with what's going on.

If they've got a good head on their shoulders, they'll be able to keep it cool and understand.

Tonight; one of my rp partners just outright said they didn't feel creative enough to play. I was rather happy to hear it, actually. You'll note they didn't sign off or disappear or have their character up and suddenly die just to get out of role playing, and I'm not bitching about it. I wouldn't -- they were honest. Brownie points for everyone! HOORAY BROWNIEZ!!!!!

I'm going to make it a point to try and do this in my own role play as often as possible.

Understand?
Current Mood HUrrrrrrrrrRRRr
Current Music How's it Gonna Be?: Third Eye Blind

Dear whatever you are.

We've played off and on for maybe two weeks. You understood that, I had a main who is a priority in my sad little role play world for various reasons.

Said reasons are, if not role playing a lot in a public setting, the screen name is something people use in order to contact me. I get busy. I get distracted. Someone needs me to approve something, someone wants to chit chat from ___(insert messenger name here), I write. I play Ever(crack)quest 2, I role play in IM's when certain role play partners are not available through AOL. I do, on occasion, even, go AFK to cook, you know. Do things? I dabble with drawing digitally, or I am actually :: Gasp:: Just plain busy doing something else with my online time that doesn't have anything to do with role play! (I have trillian now. Not only can they contact me through aol/aim, but every butt fuckery instant message client out there now.)

Accusing me of staying on the single name, in order to avoid role playing with you, or because you think I'm "being elite, cliquish, and showing favoritism," will MAKE ME WISH I WERE DOING ALL OF THE ABOVE. Do not make assumptions of a total stranger. Do not, also, think that just because I did not immediately send you an instant message the MOMENT I return from being away, wake up, or sign on that I am ignoring you.

This isn't the way life works. I will not -not- respond for absolutely no logical reason. I do not ignore people on purpose. Generally by the time I get back to apologize for my uafk, guess what? You are signed off.

I don't play those games, neither should you. Second, who are you, a stranger as far as I know, to accuse me of anything? If I behaved the way you have, I would have lost so many potential role play partners so quickly that my head would be left spinning in the dust.

This is why I dislike dealing with most people OOC. This is why I tend to dislike sending them an IM when they have not sent one to me. (Usually. I'm not perfect, and if I know you/person well enough I may pounce on occasion.)

If someone isn't responding to you in IM's, leave it be. There's a reason and the good apples will either let you know why, or contact you again the next day. Also: really, just leave it be. If you get so worked up because someone did not respond to your instant messages, its time to back away from the computer.

The point is, be mature enough to tell me what the fuck is going on, instead of waiting a week before spewing it at it. This does not make the MellyJellybeans happy. This does not make me wish to play with j00 any more.

I have tried politely explaining all of this to you, to no avail. So, for being a dickwad, you get my frustration publically ranted about in my journal. As I said, I've already discussed this with you and its gone no where. I don't think we'll be sharing the mojo again.

IN OTHER NEWS. There was isketching a few days ago with Floorelves and L's and kaotic artists. Â OH MY GOD. IT WAS LIKE AN ORGASM OF LAUGHTER.

Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with anyone who has contact with Shadow or Suliss. Just in case.

You naughty, naughty role play platform!
Current Mood Grumpy old bitch
Current Music "Take everything," Courtney Love

AOL. I AM DISAPPOINTED LATELY WITH YOUR IDEA OF ROLE PLAY. VERY. PREASE ENJOY MY RANT WHICH MAKES NO SENSE BEHIND THE CUT. BE AWARE OF ANGRY MEL SWEARING.

  • Females fling their boobies at male characters? Where have the days of awkward attempts at flirting and or/male females clumsily trying to work things out?
  • Romance. Rearry. Where the fuck has this gone?
  • Romantic pairings argueing over the stupid shit. Other than two, three? pairings I know of, have I ever seen them argue over the little things. You know, just once, I'd pay to watch a couple blow up over the fact he leaves his socks on the god damn floor, or that she leaves her hair in the sink when she brushes her hair in the morning.
  • Medieval/Fantasy. Where have you gone my delicious addiction in public rooms?

Read more here, damn it. )
